Nothing lasts for ever, neither good nor evil. Even the darkest night is followed by the dawn of a new day. And the sunshine does not continue for ever.We have seen examples of this in living memory. Hitler and his cohorts looked unstoppable at the peak of their power but had to bite the dust when the world united to put them down.
In India, the internal emergency of 1975-77 looked like a night without an end to people who lived through the period. But when it lifted, it looked as if a dark cloud has dispersed, allowing the rays of the Sun to light up the earth. The juggernaut of the BJP led NDA looked unstoppable till a few months back. The Narendra Modi dispensation has been achieving one milestone after another over the past few years. But suddenly, the dispensation looks vulnerable. A series of mis-steps have sapped the confidence of the people in the government‘a capability to take the nation forward.
To name a few, the economic disaster triggered by demonetisation and an inefficiently implemented GST regime and the erosion of the autonomy of different institutional structures have taken their toll.Riding roughshod over a weakened opposition has not helped the government‘s image one bit.Pushing farm sector legislation through Parliament without adequate debate and discussion allegedly has been another straw on the camel’s back.
Another standout example of the insensitivity of the ruling dispensation is the way in which the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has handled the Hathras ‘gangrape’ and murder case.
The way in which the Uttar Pradesh police handled the girl victim and her family is atrocious, to say the least. The tactics adopted by the state government to block the media and opposition’s access to the bereaved family of the teenager have buttressed the public impression that the ruling dispensation is insensitive, and would go all out to hide the truth.
The Yogi government has scored a self goal by seeking to block and delay Congress leaders’ visit to Hathras to meet the dead teenagers family. Some of the images of the high handed tactics adopted by the police to stop Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have gone viral and dented the Yogi government’s image. In fact, the Yogi dispensation appears to have given a push to the Congress revival plans by focusing on stopping the Gandhi siblings visit to Hathras.Food for thought for the Narendra Modi dispensation.
