We, the media persons, should ponder over the fact whether the media, especially the news media and social media, contribute to world happiness or otherwise. My personal opinion is that news media harms more than it promotes happiness. This is on account of the way it works in respect of selection of the events it chooses to report upon. It goes by the dictum that good news is no news. This way it spreads stories of gloom, violence, disorder, conflict and disasters. It even magnifies the impact thus frightening its audience rather than assuring them. Thus it spreads more of unhappiness rather than promoting happiness.
I am usually happy daily till the morning newspapers arrive or I watch a television news bulletin while munching my breakfast. Media drop on me tonnes of saddening events they gather from all around the world. Their shrieking headlines and shouting anchors tell me that the world was falling apart in all possible ways. When I come across some friends, they appear worried but enthusiastic narrating the tales they heard or read in their homes from radio or television. They want to impress me of their intelligence as being better knowledgeable than I.
Some say, the more you know, the more you suffer. Some say ignorance is a bliss.Others say, no news is a good news. Media claims it enlightens people. It warns them of impending disasters. I feel these disasters are more virtual than real ones. Does media make people happy or sad on day to day basis?Pick up a newspaper page. There is hardly any report that thrills you or touches your heart.
Why is so? All social institutions are supposed to boost human welfare.Happiness is a feeling. The feeling of being content with what you have and having a sense of gratitude for whatever you have.Happiness also depends on how we programme ourselves. Media rather than family or educational institutions programme us more these days. That seems to be reason behind the social strife of several hues.At this advanced stage of our life, could we atone for some of the media ills we knowingly or unknowingly purveyed. We can do so by spreading some good stories of life around us?
