In India, social media platforms will have to implement SIM binding from January 1, 2027. New rules were already notified by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), but since then, it has seen some change and updates and this will primarily affect platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and more, These platforms require SIM of the user to authenticate the account and use in the primary device. Once the primary device is activated, users can also log in to other platforms such as web, companion devices and more with the same account as long as the primary device has the account active. And also ensure that “web service instance of the mobile app, if provided, shall be logged out periodically (not later than six hours) and allowing the facility to the user to re-link the device using QR code.
If the registered SIM is removed, replaced or becomes inactive, the app could suspend functionality until the same number is restored through a valid SIM card or eSIM profile. The government's decision is part of a broader effort to combat cybercrime, phishing operations and so-called digital arrest scams. According to the DoT, fraudsters have exploited Indian mobile numbers by purchasing SIM cards, registering messaging accounts and then operating those accounts from outside India. Authorities believe a tighter link between messaging accounts and active SIM cards will make it more difficult to misuse Indian numbers for cross-border fraud.
The DoT issued directions to major app-based communication services, under the Telecom Cyber Security (TCS) Rules, 2024. These include WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, Arattai, Sharechat, Jiochat and Signal.
