The state witnessed intense campaigning over the past month, with voter turnout reaching record levels. The first phase recorded 92.8 per cent turnout on April 23, while the second phase saw 91.47 per cent polling on April 29 — among the highest since Independence.

In other key developments, Humayun Kabir, chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, is leading in both Nowda and Rejinagar seats in Murshidabad district by margins exceeding 5,000 and 6,000 votes respectively over his nearest rivals. Kabir, who was earlier suspended from the TMC, said the results reflected public response to “injustice” and alleged discrimination.
Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has extended his lead in the Beleghata constituency in north Kolkata by over 14,000 votes against BJP’s Partha Chaudhury after four rounds of counting.Counting is underway for 293 Assembly constituencies, with multiple rounds of vote tabulation continuing across centres.

The outcome will determine whether the BJP can secure its first-ever government in West Bengal or if the TMC manages to retain its stronghold amid a fiercely contested election.
