Uttarakhand: Char Dham Yatra suspended for 2 days amid landslides

The Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for two days after heavy monsoon rains triggered landslides and blocked roads at multiple locations across Uttarakhand, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for several districts on Tuesday.State authorities said the annual pilgrimage will resume only after weather conditions improve and the affected routes are declared safe for travel.

Heavy rainfall continued to lash several parts of the state, prompting the administration to shut schools and Anganwadi centres in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure. Residents, tourists and pilgrims have been advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Pauri Garhwal districts over the coming hours.
Pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri have been asked to check the latest weather conditions before commencing their journey. Officials warned that persistent rainfall has significantly increased the risk of landslides, falling rocks and other weather-related hazards in the Himalayan region.The Badrinath National Highway was blocked after debris accumulated near Kanchannala, disrupting vehicular movement along the route,according to sources.

In Dehradun district, continuous rainfall also damaged the newly constructed bridge over the Tons River at Nanda Ki Chowki in Prem Nagar, affecting road connectivity between Dehradun, Vikasnagar and neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.The weather department has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several areas, including Purola, Barkot, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Sonprayag, Tharali, the Nanda Devi region, Munsyari, Berinag, Gangolihat, Didihat, Jaspur, Rudrapur and Khatima.The state administration has advised people to stay away from rivers and streams, avoid venturing into landslide-prone areas and refrain from non-essential travel until the weather improves. Tourists and pilgrims have also been urged to follow advisories issued by the IMD and district authorities to ensure their safety.
