India on Tuesday welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached between the United States and Iran, with National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval expressing cautious optimism over the development and its possible impact on regional stability, energy security and global trade.
Addressing the 16th BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting, Doval said India viewed the agreement positively and hoped it would contribute to peace and stability in West Asia.“India welcomes the MOU reached between the US and Iran. We have got cautious optimism, and we hope that it will work. It will help energy security. The opening of the Strait of Hormuz is a very welcome development,” Doval said.Highlighting the importance of the strategically significant waterway, the NSA said improved maritime access would help ease disruptions in global supply chains and support international commerce. He added that the removal of bottlenecks would help address shortages in critical sectors, including fertilisers and chemicals.“And the freedom of navigation that will be available to the countries in the region and beyond will probably also greatly improve our economic prosperity,” Doval said.

The comments come amid efforts to reduce tensions in West Asia, where prolonged instability has impacted energy markets, shipping routes and global trade flows. India, being one of the world’s largest energy importers, has consistently emphasised the need for stability and uninterrupted maritime movement in the region.Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had welcomed the understanding reached between the US and Iran, calling for faster restoration of peace and stability in West Asia while stressing the importance of freedom of navigation and commerce. In a post on X, PM Modi said the conflict had caused serious economic disruptions across the world and resulted in loss of lives in several countries.“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that India hoped the implementation of the agreement would help restore peace, stability and ensure uninterrupted movement of goods and energy supplies. He also said New Delhi looked forward to further discussions on remaining issues to reach a sustainable final agreement.Meanwhile, according to agency reports, US Vice President JD Vance described the latest round of technical discussions between Washington and Tehran in Switzerland as a productive step under the 14-point MoU aimed at ending hostilities in West Asia.Vance said progress had been made on key areas, including maritime security, regional stability and nuclear oversight of Iran, raising hopes for a broader diplomatic breakthrough.
