US forces strike ISIS targets in Nigeria

The U.S. military "launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS" in Nigeria's northwest on Christmas Day following the targeting of Christians in the West African country, President Donald Trump announced Thursday. Trump wrote on Truth social he directed the strike on the "Terrorist Scum," whom he said "have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries!" According to the Republican leader, the strikes carried out by the “Department of War” were in response to what he called “vicious killing” of Christians.

Trump last month warned of possible U.S. military action in Nigeria, where there have been violent attacks against both Christians and Muslims, saying American forces may go into the country "'guns-a-blazing,' to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists." U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said on X U.S. forces "conducted a strike at the request of Nigerian authorities in Soboto State killing multiple ISIS terrorists."

Nigeria's government has said armed groups target both Muslims and Christians, and Trump's claims that Christians face persecution do not represent a complex security situation and ignore efforts to safeguard religious freedom. But it has agreed to work with the US to bolster its forces against militant groups, an agency reported. The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a press release confirming structured security cooperation and intelligence collaboration with the United States, which has contributed to precision air strikes targeting terrorist positions in Nigeria's North West region.

The country's population is split between Muslims living primarily in the north and Christians in the south. President Trump issued his statement on Christmas Day while he was at his Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago Club, where he has been spending the holiday.
