A high-level US delegation on Monday held discussions with Union Minister Jitendra Singh on private investment opportunities and industry collaboration in India’s nuclear sector, with talks focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced nuclear technologies and clean energy cooperation. The delegation, comprising representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute and the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum, met Singh in New Delhi to discuss India’s expanding Nuclear Energy Mission and recent policy reforms aimed at increasing private sector participation in the sector.
According to government statement, the discussions centred on India’s plans to expand nuclear power generation capacity from the current 8.8 GW to 100 GW by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat vision, while also exploring opportunities for technology partnerships, manufacturing collaboration and supply chain integration. Singh said India and the United States shared a “strong and future-oriented partnership” in science, technology, clean energy and emerging sectors, adding that civil nuclear cooperation was steadily gaining strategic and economic importance.
“The TRUST initiative, centred around trusted technology partnerships, resilient supply chains and innovation ecosystems, provides a strong framework for deeper engagement among governments, industry, academia and startups,” he said. The minister also highlighted the recently enacted SHANTI Act, 2025, describing it as a major reform designed to facilitate greater private sector participation, including foreign investment, in India’s nuclear energy sector.
The discussions also reviewed progress on ongoing bilateral initiatives, including the proposed Westinghouse Electric Company AP1000 project at Kovvada, cooperation under the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Energy Working Group, rare earth collaboration, machine learning and AI applications, and superconducting proton accelerator technologies through Fermilab partnerships.
Officials also discussed progress on the LIGO-India project, being jointly implemented by India’s Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with the US-based LIGO Laboratory and the National Science Foundation. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding industry-led cooperation in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, nuclear technologies and innovation-driven sectors.
