Pakistan allowed Iranian military aircraft to park despite mediator role

As Pakistan positioned itself as a diplomatic conduit between Tehran and Washington, it quietly allowed Iranian military aircraft to park on its airfields, potentially shielding them from American airstrikes, according to U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter. Iran also sent civilian aircraft to park in neighboring Afghanistan. The officials said the aircraft were moved to Pakistan, including Nur Khan Air Base near Rawalpindi, days after a ceasefire announcement between the United States and Iran earlier this year. Among the military hardware was an Iranian Air Force RC-130, a reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering variant of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules tactical transport aircraft. Senator Lindsey Graham questioned U.S. military officials.  Graham said if true, it raises doubts about Pakistan’s role as a mediator, adding, “No wonder this damn thing is going nowhere.”

Former US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad said on Tuesday reports that Pakistan allowed Iranian military aircraft to park at its airfields while acting as a mediator between Tehran and Washington, if confirmed, would be “not surprising.” "Working simultaneously with and against the US has been a pattern of Pakistani policies for the last 40 years," Khalilzad posted on X.
A Pakistani official rejected suggestions that the aircraft were being hidden, while the foreign ministry said the planes arrived during the ceasefire period for diplomatic and logistical purposes, the report added.On Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement confirmed Iranian planes were in the country. Taliban's chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied the presence of any Iranian airplanes in Afghanistan, telling CBS News, "No, that's not true and Iran doesn't need to do that."
