Both Houses of the Uttar Pradesh legislature on Thursday passed a censure motion against the Samajwadi Party, Congress and other opposition parties for allegedly obstructing women's reservation in the Lok Sabha. The motion was adopted during a special session of the assembly and the legislative council, with Speaker Satish Mahana and Council Chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh announcing its passage by a majority. The NDA blamed the opposition, including the Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress and the other INDIA bloc parties, for the “setback”, while the opposition maintained that it supported women’s reservation but questioned the government's intent. Chief Minister Yogi Aadityanath said, the Socialist Party, Congress, and INDIA alliance always oppose any progressive steps taken for the upliftment, dignity, respect, security, and self-reliance of half the population.

Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey opposed and condemned the motion. SP members staged a protest in Uttar Pradesh Assembly premises, accusing the BJP of misleading the people on the issue of women's reservation. Holding banners that read 'Implement 33% Women's Reservation, the Samajwadi Party (SP) members staged the protest in front of the statue of Chaudhary Charan Singh.Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Lal Bihari Yadav asserted that the SP is a staunch proponent of women's reservation. "The women's reservation bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament back in 2023. We harbour no opposition whatsoever to women's reservation; rather, the BJP is the one misleading the public under the guise of women's empowerment," Yadav said.
The Chhattisgarh Assembly on Thursday also passed a resolution seeking immediate implementation of one-third reservation for women in Parliament and all state legislative assemblies after completion of the delimitation process, following an over nine-hour-long debate marked by sharp exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches. The resolution, tabled by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai during a one-day special session, was adopted while the opposition Congress boycotted the proceedings.
