Union Cabinet hails Narendra Modi as longest-serving PM

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in consecutive terms. With 4399 days of continuous service as an elected Prime Minister,. Modi has surpassed the previous record held by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who served for four thousand 398 continuous days.
The Cabinet said the achievement reflected public trust, democratic participation and sustained support for the Prime Minister’s leadership, underscoring the unprecedented support bestowed by the people upon a leader guided by the ‘Nation First’ resolve. Highlighting the government’s welfare initiatives, the Cabinet said programmes aimed at providing pucca houses, electricity, clean drinking water, direct benefit transfers, free foodgrain to more than 80 crore beneficiaries and free healthcare to over 60 crore people had contributed to improving living standards and helped more than 25 crore people move out of poverty. The resolution was moved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The resolution also cited initiatives focused on youth, women and farmers. It credited government policies with helping India emerge as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem and referred to achievements in the space sector, including the Chandrayaan mission. It highlighted programmes such as the Lakhpati Didi initiative and the passage of legislation providing 33% reservation for women in legislatures.
The resolution further highlighted major policy decisions and reforms undertaken during Modi’s tenure, including the implementation of GST, One Rank One Pension (OROP), the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, labour code reforms and the abrogation of Article 370. On national security, it referred to measures against terrorism, including surgical strikes, cross-border air strikes and Operation Sindoor. It also cited efforts to tackle Naxalism, peace agreements in the Northeast and developments in India’s border management and diplomatic engagements.
The Cabinet said initiatives such as Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat had strengthened India’s manufacturing capabilities across sectors, including defence and emerging technologies. It also highlighted India’s global engagement through its G20 presidency, International Yoga Day, the International Solar Alliance and Mission LiFE.
