Giving a clarion call for reform of the United Nations, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said it cannot remain “anachronistic” and it is "essential" for the world body to be more representative and fit for purpose in the contemporary era. “The global order is inherently pluralistic and diverse. The UN began with 51 members. We are now 193. The world has changed profoundly, and so have its concerns and its opportunities,” Jaishankar said in his address to the General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. He said for the UN to address both the concerns and challenges of the world, and to strengthen the order itself, “it is essential that the UN be the central platform for finding common ground”.
Jaishankar took a jibe at Pakistan over the terrorism that it harbours, saying the country is making a 'conscious choice' of being left behind in the global order due to its Karma. "Many countries get left behind due to circumstances beyond their control, but some make conscious choices with disastrous consequences. A premier example is our neighbour Pakistan", S Jaishankar said.Jaishankar said that Pakistan's cross-border terrorism will never succeed, warning the neighbouring country of consequences for its actions. The External Affairs Minister further pointed out that Pakistan should not blame the world for its present condition, stressing that this is only its karma. "A dysfunctional nation coveting the lands of others must be exposed and must be countered", he added.

Deliberations at UN have been drowned by the intensified conflict in West Asia, on which the overwhelming mood in the UN is critical of Israel, as well as the Ukraine war that has divided the international body into a clear western bloc that opposes Russian invasion, a small set of countries that support Moscow, and a large segment of countries that seek peace and diplomacy and don’t seek to get entangled in great power conflict. India was among the pioneers of this third way when the war broke out in February 2022, and over the past three months, has adopted an unusually proactive diplomatic outreach with both Moscow and Kyiv.
