A leak from within the cabinet suggests that Keir Starmer has decided to step down as UK Prime Minister — but on his own terms. According to close associates, Starmer plans to announce an orderly timetable for his departure. Citing a member of the cabinet, the Daily Mail UK reported that Starmer is ready to step down as prime minister but will "do it on his own terms." 'He realises the current chaos is unsustainable. He simply wants to be able to do it in a dignified way and in a manner of his own choosing. He will set out a timetable," the source told the UK-based outlet.
The UK Labour government found itself in a crisis amid growing voter dissatisfaction with the Starmer administration. From the controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson and his ties to child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, to the Labour Party's poor performance in the local elections, calls for Starmer to resign have increased. Keir Starmer's popularity ratings have also tanked. According to YouGov UK surveys, around 69 per cent of Britons have an "unfavourable" opinion of the Labour prime minister.YouGov further reported that Starmer is currently the least popular prime minister on record, with many drawing comparisons to the 49 days of Liz Truss' run as UK PM. This has increased the party's tension more.
As per report, a few hours later Wes Streeting quit the Cabinet. His departure was followed shortly after by the news Josh Simons was resigning the seat in Makerfield to allow Andy Burnham to return to Parliament.Inside Downing Street, a desperate last-minute operation was launched to convince members of Labour's ruling National Executive Committee (NEC) to block Burnham from standing, report said.
Wes Streeting, the former British health secretary who resigned from the government this week, says he will run to replace Prime Minister Keir Starmer when the contest is triggered. “We need a proper contest with the best candidates on the field, and I’ll be standing,” Streeting told a think tank event in London on Saturday. The former health secretary has urged Starmer to set a timetable for his departure. In his address to the Labour supporters at a Progress group gathering, Streeting took a dig at the prime minister, saying Labour “arrived in government underprepared in too many areas and lacking clarity of vision and direction”.
