Trump: Shutdown is caused by the Democrats

US President Donal Trump blamed the continuing government shutdown, now the longest on record, for Democratic victories in high-profile contests and argued that voters did not reject him personally. Trump lamented that there had been little backlash against Democrats, who have opposed a stopgap funding bill in an effort to force Republicans to extend health care subsidies. He called the government shutdown a “big factor, negative for the Republicans.”

Trump pressed Senate Republicans to get rid of the filibuster, saying it was “the only way” to end the shutdown. “I don’t think it was good for Republicans. I’m not sure it was good for anybody,” Trump told the senators.Trump’s remarks were an acknowledgment that the Republican strategy had been a miscalculation, given that he has been unwilling to negotiate with Democrats to end the shutdown.
