US President Donald Trump on Saturday warned that he would impose a sweeping 100 per cent tariff on all Canadian imports if Ottawa moves ahead with a trade deal with China, escalating tensions over North America’s economic alignment. In a post on Truth Social, Trump directly targeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying he would not allow Canada to become a conduit for Chinese goods into the US.
Addressing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as governor, Trump said that China “will eat Canada alive” if the deal goes through. “If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a 'Drop Off Port' for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," Trump wrote on Truth Social. He accused China of posing a fundamental threat to Canada’s economy and society.
The remarks signal a hardline stance against deeper Canada–China trade ties and renewed protectionist pressure on key US allies. Donald Trump’s threat came amid an escalating war of words with Mark Carney as the Republican president’s push to acquire Greenland strained the NATO alliance. Trump had commented while in Davos, Switzerland, this week that “Canada lives because of the United States.” The tensions deepened when Trump withdrew Canada’s invitation to join his proposed Board of Peace initiative.
