US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he was “a victim of three very sinister events” during his time when he visited the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday and described the incidents as “sabotage” that include an alleged escalator malfunction, a teleprompter failure and sound problems disrupted his appearance. Trump described a series of “sinister” mishaps as deliberate acts of sabotage, saying the Secret Service will be involved in investigating the incidents. “A REAL DISGRACE took place at the United Nations — Not one, not two, but three very sinister events!” Trump said in a statement posted on Truth Social, recounting what he described as a day of near accidents and technical failures during his visit. "First the escalator event, and now a bad teleprompter. What kind of a place is this?" Trump said.
However, giving a clarification on the matter, a United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that a videographer from the US delegation who ran ahead of Trump may have “inadvertently” hit the stop mechanism at the top of the escalator. The UN official further added that the teleprompter was being operated by the White House and not the organisation.
On Tuesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the incident “unacceptable” and suggested it may not have been an innocent glitch. “If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” Leavitt wrote on X.
