Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday discussed the evolving situation in West Asia, with a focus on ensuring the continued openness and security of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he had a “useful exchange of views” with the US President and reiterated India’s position in favour of de-escalation and early restoration of peace. “India supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest. Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world. We agreed to stay in touch regarding efforts towards peace and stability,” PM Modi said.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also confirmed the conversation, noting that both leaders underlined the importance of keeping the strategic waterway open for global trade amid the ongoing conflict. The West Asia conflict has entered its fourth week, affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for nearly 25 per cent of global seaborne oil trade. The disruption has raised concerns over global energy supplies and maritime safety. Earlier, President Trump indicated that the Strait of Hormuz could “open very soon” if ongoing negotiations with Iran progress positively. He also suggested the possibility of a joint mechanism involving the United States and Iran to manage the critical route.
