Tremors were felt across West Bengal, including Kolkata, and parts of northeast India on Friday morning as an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck Bangladesh’s Narsingdi, the National Centre for Seismology said.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the quake hit 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi at 10.08 am at a depth of 10 km. The tremors prompted several people to come out on the streets as a precautionary measure.
In Bangladesh, scared residents rushed out of their homes in Dhaka as buildings shook and some makeshift structures collapsed, according to eyewitness statements. Meanwhile, officials stated tremors were widely felt across West Bengal and the northeast, including Kolkata and Assam’s Guwahati, soon after the quake occurred.There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property, officials added.
