India's Mariyappan Thangavelu scripted history at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics 2020 on Tuesday as he clinched the elusive silver medal in Men's High Jump (T63) event. Thangavelu, who had won gold in the men's high jump T-42 category at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, came close to repeating the feat once again this year but ended up missing out by a whisker. USA's Sam Grewe cleared the 1.88m height in his final third attempt to edge Thangavelu in a thrilling contest and bag the gold medal.
Sharad Kumar finished third with his season-best effort of 1.83m, Thangavelu grabbed second place on the podium with his best effort of 1.86m. Their compatriot Varun Bhati, who has a personal best of 1.86m, finished seventh with his best jump of 1.77m.
