3 Indian seafarers killed amid West Asia shipping crisis

Three Indian seafarers serving on foreign-flagged vessels have been killed and one injured as the escalating conflict in West Asia spills into critical global shipping routes, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) said on Tuesday.In a statement, the Directorate General of Shipping confirmed that four separate incidents involving Indian crew members occurred across the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman and adjoining sea areas as hostilities intensified in the region
According to sources, the maritime regulator said that it is closely monitoring developments amid heightened geopolitical tensions, where threats have included missile and drone strikes, electronic interference, and broader maritime security risks. The region, which hosts some of the world’s busiest oil and cargo transit corridors, has witnessed growing instability as military operations expand.Authorities clarified that there have been no confirmed casualties, detentions, or boarding incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels so far. Indian-flagged ships continue to operate in the region, although enhanced monitoring and verification efforts are underway to ensure crew safety.The DGS has constituted a quick response team to manage the situation. The team is tasked with coordinating immediate assistance, evacuation support, and maintaining communication channels for Indian seafarers stranded in or operating around the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters,stated officials.
