Tesla not interested in manufacturing EVs in India: Kumarswamy

Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, HD Kumaraswamy has said that the Government has launched a landmark EV manufacturing scheme to make India a global hub for electric mobility. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Monday, he said the scheme will enable fresh investments from global manufacturers in the EV passenger car segment and promote India as a global manufacturing destination for electric vehicles. "With Rs 4,150 Cr investment mandate, this is Make in India in motion — for a cleaner, stronger future," he said. Replying to a question about Elon Musk's Tesla,  the minister said, "Tesla only wants to start two showrooms. Tesla is not interested in manufacturing in India."

“Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen, Skoda, Hyundai, Kia, all these companies have already shown interest,” Kumaraswamy said.The interest from these global auto giants comes amid ongoing discussions between the government and the industry on the scheme to promote EV manufacturing in India.
