Fifteen fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who were detained by Sri Lankan authorities earlier this year, arrived in Chennai on Wednesday morning following their release from custody in Sri Lanka.According to information, the fishermen, hailing from the coastal town of Rameswaram, had been apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line while fishing in deep-sea waters. Their arrest had once again highlighted the recurring issue of fishermen inadvertently straying into foreign waters in the Palk Strait region.
Their release was facilitated after high-level discussions held in Colombo, where Vice President K. S. Radhakrishnan engaged with senior ministers of the island nation. Officials noted that the diplomatic engagement played a key role in expediting the repatriation process.Radhakrishnan’s two-day visit to Sri Lanka is being seen as significant, marking the first-ever bilateral trip by an Indian Vice President to the neighbouring country. The visit underscored efforts to strengthen ties and address long-standing concerns, including issues affecting fishermen from both nations.
Upon arrival in Chennai, arrangements were made by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department to transport the fishermen safely back to their hometown. Authorities confirmed that necessary assistance and support would be extended to the returning fishermen and their families.
