Security personnel deployed in Rawalpindi ahead of PTI protest

In Pakistan, over 1,300 police officers and security personnel have been deployed in Rawalpindi to maintain law and order situation ahead of possible Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf protest. The deployment of police and security personnel comes after former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan urged his supporters to gear up for countrywide protests following a 17-year jail term handed to him and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana 2 corruption case. In a statement, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI) said mobilisation orders have been issued across provinces ahead of synchronised protests. It said the agitation was launched on the direct instructions of Imran Khan. It added the workers have been instructed to remain on the streets as part of a long-term agitation strategy. PTI leaders also expressed support for their leader and vowed action against the verdict they termed baseless. The Toshakhana 2 case involves alleged fraud in state gifts that the former first couple received from the Saudi government in 2021.

Imran acknowledged that the court's decision was anticipated but has directed his legal team to appeal to the high court against the ruling. The Toshakhana-II corruption case pertains to the acquisition of an extravagant jewelry set, gifted to Imran Khan by the Saudi Crown Prince during an official visit in May 2021, at a minimal price. The Court verdict has led to significant political unrest and calls for nationwide protests, reflecting the deep divisions within the country. PTI leaders have voiced support for the party’s founder and criticised the verdict. Party secretary general Salman Akram Raja said that Khan had urged supporters to prepare for a street movement.
