Earthquack in Turkey, Syria: Death toll surpasses 4,000

Another massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Elbistan district in Turkey's Kahramanmaras province on Monday, the Turkish disaster agency said. Fresh tremors were also felt in Damascus, Latakia and other Syrian provinces, as per reports by Syria's SANA news agency. AFP reporters and witnesses felt the second jolt as far apart as the Turkish capital Ankara and the Iraqi Kurdistan city of Irbil.

This followed soon after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early morning Monday killng over 3800 people and thousands injured  Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the death toll was expected to rise as search and rescue operations continued.. The earthquake, with its epicentre in Gaziantep about 90 kilometres from the Syrian border, led to the toppling of hundreds of buildings. Turkey President Erdogan called Monday's earthquakes "the biggest disaster" the country has experienced in the last century.. Many coastal aras of Turkey flooded after earthquack.

The powerful earthquake flattened hundreds of buildings. Visuals from quake-hit areas show residents rushing outside on a cold night as they were jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn earthquake.The first quake struck at 04:17 am (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is home to around two million people, the US Geological Survey said.

The Danish geological institute said the quake tremors were felt as far away as Greenland. At least 2500 people died in Turkey from a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck early Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. In Syria, more than 1550 people were killed by the quake.

India has decided to immediately dispatch search and rescue teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and medical teams along with relief material to Turkey. The relief measures will be taken up in coordination with the government of Türkey. The decision was taken in a meeting held by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Dr. P. K. Mishra in New Delhi on Monday in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s instructions to offer all possible assistance and relief measures to the victims of an earthquake there. has decided to immediately dispatch search and rescue teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and medical teams along with relief material to Turkey.
