Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed direct talks with Ukraine on May 15 in Turkey. He stressed said it should beaimed at achieving a durable peace and eliminating the root causes of the war. Putin sent thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022, triggering the gravest confrontation between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. He said on Sunday that Russia was proposing direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul in an attempt to "eliminate the root causes of the conflict" and "to achieve the restoration of a long-term, lasting peace." We suggest to resume talks that were stopped not by us… what is bad about this?’ ‘Those who want peace must support this,’ he said.

Major European powers threw their weight behind an unconditional 30-day Ukraine ceasefire with the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump, and threatened Putin with "massive" new sanctions if he did not accept within days. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Poland met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for peace talks in Kyiv in a show of unity a day after Russia’s Vladimir Putin hosted his allies at a Victory Day parade in Red Square. French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are calling on Russia to accept an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine to create space for talks. This is the first time the leaders of the four countries have travelled together to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, in a social media post, said Ukraine and all allies are ready for a full, unconditional ceasefire on land, air, and at sea for at least 30 days starting on Monday. Earlier, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Ukraine’s allies must stop sending weapons to Ukraine before any ceasefire can happen.
