The Election Commission of India has issued directions for the suspension of Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP), Ravjot Kaur Grewal with immediate effect. She took charge in September. Meanwhile, IPS officer Surinder Lamba, who was serving as AIG (Personnel-1) at Police Headquarters, Chandigarh, has been posted as Tarn Taran SSP after Election Commission cleared the appointment. The action has been taken on the complaint of Shiromani Akali Dal which has alleged that Ravjot Grewal and two other police officers were favouring Aam Aadmi Party in Tarn Taran ahead of the November 11 Assembly by-election in the border district.
In his complaint, SAD chief spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Khler also accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of 'misusing' the local administration and the police. He alleged that 'false' FIRs were registered against SAD leaders, calling it a "deliberate design to harass, silence, and restrict the opposition's campaign activity". Last month, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had also staged a dharna in Tarn Taran district over the 'false' FIRs against his party leaders. He had also questioned Grewal's actions but asserted that SAD leaders are not afraid of going to jail.
Congress leader Pargat Singh said, “This action will boost morale of workers and other parties participating in the elections.” he said. The ruling AAP questioned the EC move, claiming that the action was taken without any “concrete complaint”. AAP leader Baltej Pannu claimed that the opposition was “unnerved by the immense support for the AAP in the bypoll”.
