Poland calls NATO meeting after shot down Russian drones

Poland’s military scrambled its fighter jets on Wednesday to shoot down several Russian drones that had entered its airspace during an overnight attack on western Ukraine, the first known instance of a NATO country firing shots since Russia’s full-scale invasion. Russia has carried out an "unprecedented violation" of Poland's airspace, according to Warsaw's military command.In a statement on X, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said it had detected drones in its airspace as a result of a Russian attack on Ukraine.Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there were 19 intrusions into his country's airspace overnight, and that a large portion of the drones had flown in from Belarus.Four drones were likely shot down, he added, with the last one being brought down at 6.45am local time (5.45am UK). Consultations with Poland's allies to boost air defences are ongoing, he said. Tusk also said that Poland has asked to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which allows alliance members to consult with other members on issues.A spokesperson for Poland's interior ministry said parts of seven drones have been found, as well as parts of one missile. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, the first crossing of the border into Poland by a Russian drone occurred at 00:50 local time (23:50 BST). He writes on X that "at least two Russian drones that entered Polish territory during the night used Belarusian airspace". This "may be greater than the previously announced figure", he says.Drones were "apparently" approaching targets in Poland as well as in Ukraine, he adds. He says updated data suggests there were at least two dozen Russian drones that could have entered Polish airspace. Ukraine is working on verifying this, he adds.
Russia unleashed a wave of strikes across Ukraine overnight, including in the western city of Lviv, around 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Polish border. Belarus, a close ally of Moscow, said its air defense forces had tracked and shot down several drones that “lost their course as a result of electronic warfare measures” during an overnight exchange of air attacks between Russia and Ukraine.
