PM Modi holds key bilateral talks with BRICS Leaders in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of bilateral meetings with leaders from Ethiopia, the UAE and Malaysia on Saturday on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, as India stepped up engagement with key partners across the expanded grouping.
PM Modi met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali at Hyderabad House and discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation. Ethiopia, which became a full BRICS member in 2024, has emerged as an important partner for India, including in areas such as trade, investment and defence cooperation

PM Modi also held talks with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with discussions focused on further strengthening the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, particularly in trade and energy security.

In another meeting, Modi met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and reviewed progress in bilateral ties following his visit to Malaysia earlier this year. The discussions covered trade and investment, defence, semiconductors, infrastructure, digital economy, energy, fintech, education and tourism. Malaysia also agreed to the establishment of an Indian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi to attend the BRICS Summit, his first visit to India in nearly seven years. Modi and Xi are expected to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit, with the meeting likely to provide an opportunity to discuss the broader trajectory of India-China relations.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13 under its 2026 chairship, guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The summit brings together leaders of BRICS members and partner countries, with discussions focused on development, trade, technology, finance, sustainability and cooperation across the Global South.
