Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted yoga’s role in improving physical and mental health and shared a Sanskrit subhashitam saying yoga quiets the mind, as nations marked the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21.
In a post on X, PM Modi said the success of International Yoga Day shows that yoga is helping millions become healthier and more confident. He quoted the verse to underline that two core practices — calming the mind and regulating breath — lead to mental stillness. The Prime Minister also thanked people worldwide for making Yoga Day a global celebration.

PM Modi led India’s main observance on Sunday in Kolkata, taking part in the Common Yoga Protocol on Red Road alongside thousands of participants. Speaking at the event, he described yoga as more than physical exercise, calling it a source of consciousness, energy and inner light that supports every stage of life. This year’s theme, Yoga for Healthy Ageing, received special emphasis. The Prime Minister said yoga helps maintain flexibility, energy and resilience, reduces stress and lowers the risk of lifestyle diseases. “Healthy ageing means living with purpose and vitality,” he said, urging people to make yoga a daily habit rather than an annual ritual.
PM Modi also pointed to the reach of Yoga 365, a 100-day online programme that drew over three million participants from 130 countries, as evidence of the practice’s growing international appeal. He closed his remarks with a call for collective well-being, invoking the ancient prayer Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah — may all be happy, may all be free from illness.
