NYPD charge two people running covert station for China

In the United States, two people have been arrested for allegedly running a covert station in New York city for China’s police force. It is said that the two men were using it as a base to track Chinese dissidents who were residing in the US. According to the US Department of Justice, the duo destroyed evidence when confronted by the FBI. The two men are New York City residents and operated the illegal overseas police station in lower Manhattan, New York. The station was allegedly set up in February 2022, and is said to have been operated by Ministry of Public Security, Beijing. “Harry” Lu Jianwang, 61, and Chen Jinping, 59, were each charged in Brooklyn federal court with conspiring to act as agents of China’s government and obstruction of justice for opening the covert outpost in Manhattan’s Chinatown in early 2022. 
In October 2022, the FBI conducted a judicially authorized search of the illegally run police station, wherein the agency's agents interviewed the two people and seized their phones. In reviewing the contents of these phones, “This prosecution reveals the Chinese government’s flagrant violation of our nation’s sovereignty by establishing a secret police station in the middle of New York City,” US Attorney Breon Peace said in a statement. The two also tried to obstruct the Justice Department’s investigation by deleting their communications with an official of the Chinese Ministry of Public Security after finding out about the FBI probe, federal prosecutors said.
