Nepal: At least 19 killed in Gen Z protests against social media ban

In Nepal, at least 19 people were killed and more than a hundred were injured in violent clashes in Kathmandu and other places as Gen-Z protestors took to the streets to protest against corruption and the government's ban on 26 media apps, as per local media reports. The army was deployed in Kathmando after angry protesters broke curfew restrictions and entered restricted zones near Parliament. As the clashes escalated, police opened fire at multiple locations, prompting authorities to impose a curfew in the capital.

While the government claims the ban is a matter of regulatory compliance, protesters view it as a direct act of censorship aimed at suppressing critical voices and organised dissent. The Nepal government, while announcing the ban on social media platforms, said that the companies had been given notices to register officially in the country and had failed to do so. Meanwhile, platforms like TikTok, Viber, and three other platforms which had registered continue to operate in the country. One user has explained about the agitation.

Despite phone and internet blackouts imposed by the government, Gen Z activists turned to alternative platforms such as TikTok and Reddit to mobilise. Thousands of young demonstrators gathered, chanting slogans against the government and its policies. The march began at Maitighar Mandala and advanced towards the Parliament building.
