Nagaon bypoll records 37.82% voting till 11am, Kabir detained in Bengal

The Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam recorded a voter turnout of 37.82% till 11 am on Tuesday, as polling continued across six constituencies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry amid keen political contests.
Voting began at 7 am and is scheduled to continue until 5 pm in Nagaon, where 15 candidates are in the fray. The contest is primarily between BJP candidate Debashish Sharma, Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. The by-election was necessitated after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and subsequently won the Dispur Assembly seat on a BJP ticket.
In West Bengal, bypolls are being held in Nandigram and Rejinagar. Nandigram was vacated by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who retained Bhabanipur in the Assembly elections, while Rejinagar fell vacant after Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir retained the Nowda seat.
In a major development, Kabir was detained by Rejinagar Police on Tuesday following a heated argument with police personnel at his party office in Murshidabad. He had earlier cast his vote and accused the police of interfering with the polling process. Police said he was taken into custody following the confrontation.

West Bengal recorded a combined voter turnout of 19.47% in the first two hours of polling, according to the figures provided.

In Tamil Nadu, voting is underway in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, where actor-politician and TVK leader C Joseph Vijay has fielded former AIADMK legislators K Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama, respectively. The DMK has fielded I Paranthamen in Madurantakam and Suganya in Dharapuram. Turnout at 9 am stood at 15.99% in Madurantakam and 17.55% in Dharapuram.
In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency is witnessing a multi-cornered contest following Chief Minister N Rangasamy's decision to retain Mangalam after winning both seats in the Assembly elections. The bypolls are being closely watched as an electoral test for the major political parties across the four regions. Votes will be counted on October 9.
