In a significant development, the Gujarat Police has synergized modern technology involving the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) portal to crack complex criminal cases. The successful implementation is set to solve crimes more effectively, accelerate investigations, and enhance accuracy in identifying offenders across the state. The initiative has already led to solving around 80 major crimes up to September 2025, marking a major stride in the state’s efforts to modernize policing through digital innovation, an official statement said.
State Police Chief Vikas Sahay emphasized that the integration of such technology has made the process of crime investigation faster, more efficient, and accurate. “The adoption of modern systems like NAFIS underscores Gujarat Police’s commitment to professional and technology-driven policing,” he said.Under the NAFIS initiative, fingerprints of criminals arrested in various serious crimes are stored in a national database of more than 1.20 crore records, with Gujarat contributing over 22 lakh fingerprint entries to this system. The robust database has become a critical tool for identifying repeat offenders and linking suspects to multiple crime scenes across states.
Demonstrating the efficiency of NAFIS, the Gujarat Police recently cracked a case registered at the Gaekwad Haveli Police Station in Ahmedabad. Fingerprints collected from the crime scene were uploaded to the NAFIS portal, which instantly identified a match. The system automatically alerted State Police Chief Vikas Sahay, who promptly coordinated with the Mumbai Police Commissioner and shared the suspect’s details.Owing to swift inter-state collaboration, the Mumbai Police apprehended the accused within just 48 hours, handing him over to the Gujarat Police. To acknowledge their timely response and cooperation, Vikas Sahay presented a certificate of appreciation to the Mumbai Police team. Highlighting this success, Sahay noted that technology-backed systems like NAFIS not only expedite investigations but also enhance the overall precision and professionalism of law enforcement. “Our aim is to ensure that Gujarat Police remains at the forefront of tech-enabled policing in India,” he added.
