President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday presented the prestigious ‘President of India’s Police Colour’ to the Sikkim Police at a ceremony held in Gangtok, recognising the force’s distinguished service and contribution towards maintaining peace, security, and justice in the Himalayan state. Addressing the gathering, President Murmu congratulated all past and present officers and personnel of the Sikkim Police for the honour. She noted that since its establishment in 1897, the force has played a crucial role in ensuring harmony and stability in Sikkim through its professional conduct and people-friendly approach.
The President said India’s policing system still carries the imprint of the colonial era, when the primary objective of the police was to control the public rather than serve them. She stressed that this colonial mindset must be completely discarded to empower citizens and help realise the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’. According to her, the role of the police should evolve from exercising authority over people to working in cooperation with them.
Emphasising the importance of transparency and accountability in policing, President Murmu said the police system must become more citizen-friendly so that people can register grievances without fear. She also called for a sensitive approach towards women, children, and vulnerable sections of society. President Murmu praised the Sikkim Police for earning the affection and respect of the people through its professional efficiency and friendly demeanour, while continuing to make a significant contribution towards maintaining peace and harmony in the state.
