After MLAs the TMC MP also revolted against the party bosses. Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha Sukhendu Sekhar Roy on Monday announced his resignation. Roy has stepped down not only from the Upper House but also from the primary membership of the Trinamool Congress. In a letter, Roy accused the Trinamool Congress of rampant corruption, extreme violence against women, and failures across education, health, industry, employment, and law and order. He pointed to the recently held West Bengal assembly elections, where he said the electorate expressed a clear vote of no-confidence in the party that has ruled the state for 15 years. For the first time in Bengal’s history, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a large number of seats. Roy added that the newly elected government has already begun implementing programs aimed at development and reconstruction, in line with its election promises.
Ray, among TMC's most recognisable faces in Parliament, announced his decision in the national capital hours before a meeting of the INDIA bloc, to be attended by former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. His resignation comes barely days after an unprecedented rebellion in the party's legislature wing in West Bengal, where 58 TMC MLAs broke ranks with the leadership and backed Ritabrata Banerjee for the post of Leader of the Opposition, rejecting the party's official nominee Shovandeb Chattopadhyay.
And in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress strongman and former MLA Jahangir Khan was arrested early Monday morning by Police. He was apprehended near the Nepal border. He was reportedly attempting to flee across the border when he was detained and brought back to Kolkata for further questioning. The arrest comes in the wake of the Falta Assembly re-election held on 21st of last month. Just 48 hours before polling, Jahangir Khan dramatically withdrew from the contest.Following the defeat, Khan disappeared from public view, absent from both his home and party office. His arrest marks the end of weeks of speculation about his whereabouts. The arrest comes weeks after Calcutta High Court’s vacation bench refused to extend the interim protection in five FIRs granted to the TMC strongman. Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee referred the matter to a regular bench. Earlier, Khan was granted interim protection by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya till 26st of last month, considering the re-polls there on May 21.
Considered close to Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee, Jahangir Khan was an influential leader of Falta in South 24 Parganas. After the change of regime in the State, several villagers had raised allegations of land grab and extortion against Jahangir Khan.
