Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee, and Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee , staged a protest in Kolkata on Saturday following an alleged attack on the latter's residence in Kalighat in the early hours of the day, according to agency reports.
The incident took place around 2 am when clashes reportedly broke out between TMC workers and BJP supporters near Abhishek Banerjee's residence. The gathering was reportedly linked to celebrations marking his 39th birthday. At least eight people were injured, including three who sustained serious injuries, according to reports.
Abhishek Banerjee alleged that his residence and office were targeted by individuals he described as "BJP goons", claiming that the premises had been under surveillance for two days before the incident. He also alleged that it was the seventh attempt on his life in the past six months and criticised the Kolkata Police and judiciary over their alleged inaction.
Following the incident, a large police contingent was deployed in the area, and several people were detained in connection with the overnight clashes.Mamata Banerjee reached the Kalighat residence later in the morning and accused the BJP of engaging in "hooliganism" and disrupting traditional Kali Puja and Diwali preparations in the locality.
Questioning the timing of the incident ahead of the festivals, she said, "Tomorrow is Kali Puja and Diwali. Last night, at 2:00 AM, an attack was carried out at Abhishek Banerjee's house. This is our locality, a route through which many processions of Goddess Kali pass. Why are you causing such a disturbance?"The TMC chief also alleged that permissions for some traditional puja celebrations had been revoked while a new puja was allowed to be organised, obstructing access to their own celebrations."There is complete hooliganism going on. People show up here at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. If you dare to use a bulldozer, why do you come here at 3:00 in the morning with a gang of thugs to attack a Kali Puja celebration?" she said.
