Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary MA Baby on Friday strongly criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for equating the CPI(M) with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), calling the remarks “unfortunate” and reflective of a lack of understanding of the party’s role in Kerala and across India.
The sharp response came a day ahead of the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled for Saturday evening. In a video message posted on X, Baby said, “The very fact that he in a way equated the CPI(M) and RSS betrays the absence of a correct understanding of the role of CPI(M) and RSS in Kerala or India.”

Rahul Gandhi, speaking earlier in Kottayam, had said that he fights the RSS and CPI(M) ideologically but his biggest complaint against both was their lack of empathy for the people.
Rejecting the comparison, Baby asserted that the CPI(M) has been at the forefront of combating the RSS politically and ideologically in Kerala. “They have killed around 100 young CPI(M) comrades as we are committed to the fight against RSS,” he said.He reminded Gandhi of the Congress’ reliance on Left support in 2004. Manmohan Singh could not have formed a government in 2004 without the support of CPI(M) and other Left parties,” Baby noted, adding that Congress lacked a majority at the time.
Taking a swipe at Gandhi’s electoral choices, Baby remarked, “The moment he steps into Kerala, maybe he becomes a former MP from Wayanad. He did not have to fight the RSS or BJP there but a CPI candidate.” Rahul Gandhi had contested against CPI’s Annie Raja in Wayanad before vacating the seat for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. While maintaining that CPI(M) has criticized Congress’ economic policies, Baby clarified that such criticism has always been “friendly” and never equated the Congress with the BJP or RSS. “So, it was quite unfortunate that, in a very casual and sweeping manner, Rahul Gandhi put CPI(M) and RSS together as his ideological enemies,” he said.
