Kerala: UDF set for massive win; Chandy Oommen retains Puthuppally

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is likely to secure a massive victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, maintaining a commanding lead as counting of votes entered the final stages across constituencies.After over six hours of counting since 8 a.m., the UDF was leading in 101 of the 140 seats, well past the majority mark, while the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), was ahead in just under 40 constituencies. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was leading in only two seats, according to available trends.


In a key result, Congress MLA Chandy Oommen retained the Puthuppally constituency with a massive margin of 52,907 votes, reinforcing the UDF’s stronghold in the region.The UDF also swept Wayanad district after a 15-year gap, winning all three Assembly constituencies. In a major upset, CPI(M) leader and outgoing minister O. R. Kelu lost the Mananthavady seat to Congress candidate Usha Vijayan by 10,543 votes after a closely fought contest.
Among other results, Congress leader Tony Chammany won the Vypeen constituency, defeating CPI(M)’s M.B. Shiny by 15,648 votes. In Perumbavoor, Congress candidate Manoj Moothedan secured victory with a margin of 28,434 votes over LDF’s Basil Paul.In a significant political upset, expelled CPI(M) leader V. Kunhikrishnan, contesting as a UDF-backed Independent, breached the Left stronghold of Payyannur, defeating sitting MLA T.I. Madhusoodanan by 7,487 votes.


Meanwhile, UDF candidate Parakkal Abdulla won the Kuttiyadi constituency in Kozhikode with a margin of 10,922 votes, further adding to the alliance’s tally.With trends strongly favouring the UDF, the results indicate a significant political shift in Kerala, with the Opposition alliance set to comfortably cross its target of 100 seats and return to power with a decisive mandate.
