Ahmedabad’s Kankaria Lakefront attracted more than 6.72 lakh visitors during the ongoing summer season, underscoring its growing importance as one of Gujarat’s leading urban tourism destinations and a key contributor to local economic activity. The surge in visitor numbers comes as Gujarat prepares to host the Central Gujarat edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) on June 29-30 at GSFC University in Vadodara, where tourism and culture have been identified as priority sectors for regional growth and investment.
According to information from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Kankaria Lakefront recorded a footfall of 6,72,785 visitors between April 27 and June 3, 2026. The attraction continues to draw tourists from across Gujarat and other parts of the country, benefiting from a combination of recreational facilities, cultural attractions and improved urban infrastructure.
Situated in Ahmedabad’s Maninagar area, Kankaria Lakefront has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. Originally known as a historic lake with architectural and cultural significance, the site was redeveloped into a modern public space in 2008, incorporating landscaped promenades, entertainment zones, recreational facilities and visitor amenities. The redevelopment project was inaugurated on December 25, 2008, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Since then, the lakefront has emerged as a prominent landmark in the city’s tourism landscape.
Industry observers note that destinations such as Kankaria play an increasingly important role in strengthening urban economies. Higher tourist footfall translates into increased spending on hospitality, food services, transportation and retail, generating business opportunities for local enterprises and supporting employment across multiple sectors. The lakefront's popularity also reflects a broader trend in urban tourism, where investments in public spaces and cultural infrastructure are helping cities attract visitors while improving quality of life for residents. Such projects not only enhance a city's appeal but also contribute to branding and long-term economic development. As policymakers and industry stakeholders gather later this month for VGRC Central Gujarat, Kankaria Lakefront is expected to be highlighted as an example of how tourism-focused infrastructure projects can stimulate economic activity, create livelihoods and strengthen Gujarat’s position as a major tourism destination. With tourism and culture emerging as important drivers of regional development, the success of Kankaria Lakefront offers insights into the potential benefits of integrating heritage, recreation and modern urban planning to create sustainable growth opportunities.
