Jordan:Verbal shouting match turned into a fist fighting in Parliament

In Jordan, some parliamentarians traded punches in a brawl in parliament on Tuesday after a verbal row escalated when the assembly speaker called on a deputy to leave, witnesses said. No one was injured in the punch-up that began over the refusal of a member to apologise over unwarranted remarks during a session to debate proposed amendments to the constitution. Live footage on state media showed several MP's punching each other while one deputy fell to the ground as others shouted in chaotic scenes that lasted a few minutes.

There was a verbal shouting match that turned into a fist fighting by several deputies. The behavior is unacceptable to our people and harms our country's reputation, said Khalil Atiyeh, a member of parliament who witnessed the session.Several deputies had discussed a draft amendment, which would add the Arabic female noun for a Jordanian citizen into a chapter in the constitution on equal rights, on December 28. But MPs angrily shouted it was 'useless' during the heated debate in the House of Representatives in Jordan's capital Amman, which was broadcast live on Al-Mamlaka television channel. Amendments proposed to the constitution by a royal commission this year would give MPs the power to choose the prime minister.
