External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar on Friday reaffirmed India's commitment to building a modern, transparent and internationally compatible legal environment, while calling for inclusive and harmonised international trade laws that reflect the developmental priorities of the Global South.
Addressing the inaugural session of the international conference marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) in New Delhi, Dr. Jaishankar said the Commission has consistently adapted to emerging global realities while upholding the principles of inclusivity, consensus and respect for diverse legal traditions.Highlighting India's long association with UNCITRAL, the minister noted that India is among only eight countries to have maintained continuous membership of the Commission and has actively contributed to the evolution of international trade law across multiple areas.

Dr. Jaishankar said the global economy is undergoing profound transformation driven by rapid technological advances, digital commerce, evolving supply chains and changing investment patterns, reshaping the movement of goods, services, capital and data across borders.He said these developments, coupled with geopolitical uncertainties and supply chain disruptions, have reinforced the need for predictable and harmonised legal frameworks, efficient dispute-resolution mechanisms and greater certainty in cross-border transactions to facilitate international trade and investment.
Jaishankar further stated India's legal reforms in areas such as arbitration, commercial dispute resolution and insolvency reflect the country's determination to create a transparent, modern and globally compatible legal ecosystem. He added that these reforms are essential to achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which envisages a resilient economy, greater manufacturing capacity, technological innovation and deeper integration with global markets.Emphasising the growing role of developing nations, Dr. Jaishankar said the Global South must have a stronger voice in shaping the future of international trade law. He stressed that the evolving legal architecture should be more democratic, inclusive and responsive to the developmental needs and practical realities of emerging economies.
He also praised UNCITRAL's contribution over the past six decades in developing model laws, conventions and legal standards that have helped harmonise and modernise international trade law worldwide.Following the event, Dr. Jaishankar said in a post on X that India remains committed to strengthening a transparent and internationally compatible legal framework while promoting harmonised legal standards and efficient dispute resolution for cross-border commerce.
Later in the day, the External Affairs Minister unveiled the book We The People – 250 Voices that Shaped US-India Relationship, published by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, and interacted with contributors who have played a role in strengthening bilateral ties. He also highlighted his recent participation in the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with India, the ASEAN Regional Forum, the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the QUAD Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila, where he held several bilateral discussions.
