UK,Canada, Australia recognise Palestinian state, Israel: won't happen

In a landmark development, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have formally recognized the State of Palestine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced in a video statement that the United Kingdom is formally recognising the State of Palestine, describing the move as a step toward reviving hope for peace and a two-state solution. Canada led the diplomatic move earlier on Sunday day, becoming the first G7 nation to formally recognize the State of Palestine. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized his country’s commitment to peace, saying that Canada was offering its partnership in building a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel. Canadian officials noted that the Palestinian Authority’s rejection of violence and its support for peaceful coexistence were central to the decision.

Australia followed suit shortly after, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong issuing a joint statement affirming recognition of Palestine as an “independent and sovereign” state. They framed the move as part of a broader international effort to reignite momentum for peace, beginning with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks. France is expected to join the wave of recognitions during the upcoming UN General Assembly, alongside Belgium and other nations. While largely symbolic, these recognitions mark a significant shift in global diplomacy and are aimed at isolating extremist factions and empowering peaceful leaders within the Palestinian leadership.

Reacting to the announcements, Netanyahu accused the leaders of the UK, Canada and Australia of "giving a huge reward to terrorism" - he added that "there will be no Palestinian state". Some families of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza have strongly opposed the UK's decision, saying the move has "dramatically complicated efforts to bring home our loved ones"
