Israeli Airstrike in Southern Lebanon kills atleast 7 despite fragile truce

An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon killed at least seven people and injured three others early Saturday, marking one of the deadliest attacks since a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect in June.According to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA), the strike targeted a house on the outskirts of the village of Ansar in southern Lebanon. Rescue teams and paramedics continued searching through the rubble for survivors and additional victims. The latest attack comes amid growing concerns over the durability of the ceasefire agreement announced by Israel and the Lebanese government in late June.
Under the framework agreement reached on June 26, Israeli forces were expected to gradually withdraw from southern Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. The agreement also outlined steps toward a broader peace process between the two sides, which have technically remained in a state of war since the establishment of Israel nearly eight decades ago. However, Hezbollah has rejected direct negotiations and was not a party to the agreement, raising questions about the long-term viability of the ceasefire.
Saturday's airstrike was accompanied by intense Israeli attacks on the strategically important Ali Taher hill, which overlooks parts of the southern city of Nabatiyeh and several key transportation routes, according to Lebanese media reports.Despite the truce, Israeli military operations have continued almost daily in areas north of the Litani River, a region that has long served as an informal dividing line in southern Lebanon. Large areas south of the river remain under Israeli military control.
Tensions between the two sides have remained high despite several rounds of diplomatic negotiations. Lebanon and Israel have held seven rounds of talks, with the latest meeting taking place in Rome earlier this month. The ceasefire has faced additional strain following the deaths of two Israeli soldiers in an explosion in southern Lebanon earlier this month. The incident marked the first Israeli military fatalities since the truce took effect. Hezbollah did not comment on the explosion.
The militant group has repeatedly refused to disarm, accusing the Lebanese government of making excessive concessions without securing guarantees for a complete Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. The current conflict began on March 2 after Hezbollah launched rockets across the border two days after the United States and Israel carried out military strikes against Iran.
Since then, more than 4,000 people have been killed in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, according to media reports. On the Israeli side, around 40 soldiers and three civilians, including a military contractor, have lost their lives.
