FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, putting to rest speculation over its involvement amid recent geopolitical tensions. The tournament, set to be jointly hosted by United States, Mexico, and Canada, will mark the first edition featuring an expanded 48-team format.
Infantino made the announcement during his inaugural address at the FIFA Congress held in Vancouver, where he underscored football’s role as a unifying force in a divided world.
“I should say, confirming straight away for those who may want to say something else or write something else, that of course Iran will be participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026. And of course, Iran will play in the United States of America. The reason is very simple, dear friends — because we have to unite,” Infantino said.He emphasised that football has the power to bridge divides and promote peace, especially at a time when global tensions remain high.“We have to bring people together. It is my responsibility, it is our responsibility. Football unites the world, FIFA unites the world. There are enough problems around the world and enough people trying to divide it. If nobody tries to unite, what will happen to our world?” he added.
Earlier, uncertainty had surrounded Iran’s participation after reports suggested the country might not send its team to the United States, citing tensions linked to recent developments involving Israel and alleged US backing.Concerns were further amplified when Iran did not send a delegation to the FIFA Congress, making it the only one among the 211 member associations absent from the gathering. Reports indicated that Iranian officials, including football federation president Mehdi Taj, faced issues with entry permissions.Despite these developments, FIFA’s confirmation signals that Iran will compete in the 2026 World Cup, reinforcing the governing body’s stance on keeping sport separate from political divisions and ensuring inclusive global participation.
