Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi in first official reaction to US attacks has said,"In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people." "The United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has committed a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the NPT by attacking Iran's peaceful nuclear installations. The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences," Abbas Araghchi said.
"Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior," he maintained.
Meanwhule, Iran’s mission to the United Nations has formally requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following US airstrikes on its nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. In a letter addressed to the Council, Iran condemned what it described as a "blatant and unlawful act of aggression" and urged the Security Council to respond immediately. “The Islamic Republic of Iran urgently demands that the Security Council convene without delay to address this clear act of aggression, condemn it in the strongest possible terms, and take all necessary measures within its mandate under the UN Charter to ensure the perpetrators are held fully accountable and do not escape punishment,” the letter said.
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency confirmed the attack on the Fordo nuclear site, and acknowledged that separate strikes had targeted Natanz and Isfahan. The news agency also quoted Akbar Salehi, Isfahan’s deputy governor in charge of security affairs, as saying there had been attacks around the site. He did not elaborate.
Israel says its sweeping assault, which began last Friday, on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program is necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from realizing its avowed plan to destroy the Jewish state. Iran has retaliated by launching over 470 ballistic missiles and around 1,000 drones at Israel. So far, Iran’s missile attacks have killed 24 people and wounded thousands in Israel, according to health officials and hospitals. Some of the missiles have hit apartment buildings, causing heavy damage.
