India vows to protect energy security, warns of impact on US ties

India on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding energy security after the US House of Representatives passed legislation targeting countries that continue to purchase Russian oil and gas.The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India remains “firmly committed to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people” and will continue sourcing energy from diverse suppliers based on evolving market dynamics.“We are monitoring further developments on this matter,” the MEA said, adding that India has clearly conveyed to the US its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests.The Indian government will also work closely with trade and industry bodies to assess and address the implications of the legislation, the ministry said.

The US House has passed a sweeping sanctions and tariff bill aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine. The legislation authorises US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries, including India, to discourage their dependence on Russian oil and gas. It also provides for expanded sanctions on Iran.
The bill will now move to Trump for consideration and would need his signature to become law.India said the issue had been discussed at high levels with various US interlocutors in recent months. New Delhi has “very clearly articulated” its concerns about the potential impact of such measures on bilateral relations and international energy markets.
The development comes as India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, remains among the major buyers of Russian crude. Russian oil has become an important source of supplies for India since Western sanctions were imposed on Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.New Delhi has repeatedly defended its purchases of Russian oil, maintaining that its large population and growing economy require secure, affordable and reliable energy supplies.
