India test-fires nuclear-capable Agni-4 ballistic missile

India on Thursday successfully test-fired the medium-range ballistic missile Agni-4 from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha. The Defence Ministry said the launch validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile. The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command. The Ministry added that the successful launch marks another milestone in strengthening the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities.

The Agni-4 is a nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a strike range of around 4,000 km. It is equipped with advanced avionics, a Ring Laser Gyro-based Inertial Navigation System and several indigenous technologies designed to improve accuracy and performance. The missile features a two-stage solid propulsion system and is lighter than earlier variants in the Agni series. It is also road-mobile and can be launched from a canister, providing greater operational flexibility and enabling faster deployment when required.
The Ministry of Defence said the successful trial reaffirmed India's policy of maintaining a credible minimum deterrence while enhancing the operational readiness of its strategic missile forces. The successful test adds to India's ongoing efforts to validate the reliability of its strategic missile systems through periodic user trials under operational conditions.
