India stresses need to protect navigation, seafarers in talks with Iran

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi on Friday held a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi. The two leaders exchanged views on recent developments in West Asia. During the meeting, Mr Modi underscored the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce, and the safety and well-being of seafarers.  The Prime Minister also thanked Iran for its regular, high-level participation in BRICS-related meetings despite the challenging circumstances. He noted the potential for BRICS in building the spirit of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability among countries in the Global South. Modi also thanked President Pezeshkian for his participation in the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum.
The Prime Minister also held a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit 2026. Modi on Friday also met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Guterres congratulated PM Modi on India’s BRICS Chairship for the fourth time during the meeting. The two leaders underscored the importance of multipolarity and stressed the need to reform multilateral institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, to make them more representative of contemporary global realities. Conflicts, maritime security and global challenges discussed.

PM Modi and Guterres held discussions on a range of international issues, including ongoing conflicts and freedom of navigation. They also exchanged views on sustainable development, human-centric artificial intelligence, progress in renewable energy and global food security.
