India, Mauritius ink 8 MoUs to bolster strategic, economic relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius witnessed the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing strategic cooperation and economic collaboration between the two nations. During the meeting on Wednesday, they exchanged 8 MoUs and agreements related to – local currency settlement system, Credit facility agreement, Training programme for diplomats, Sharing of white shipping information, to deal with financial crimes, co operation in the field of MSME, training of public officers for good governance. Among the key agreements was an MoU between the Central Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India on a Local Currency Settlement System, facilitating smoother financial transactions. Additionally, a Credit Facility Agreement was signed between the Government of Mauritius and the State Bank of India to finance projects under the Central Water Authority’s Pipe Replacement Programme.
At a joint press statement, the Prime Minister emphasised Mauritius’ crucial role in India’s regional strategy, highlighting its significance in the Global South, the Indian Ocean, and the African continent. Speaking on the occasion, he underscored India’s commitment to regional stability and prosperity. He said both nations are not only linked by Indian Ocean but also connected by tradition and culture. 
Unveiling a new initiative,. Modi announced, For Global South our vision will be – MAHASAGAR-Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. Under this, trade for development, capacity building for sustainable growth, and mutual security for shared future will be included. The announcement reaffirms India’s long-standing ties with Mauritius and its broader vision for regional cooperation and development.  PM Modi attended the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as the Chief Guest at Champ de Mars, Mauritius. An Indian Navy contingent took part in the parade. NCC cadets, part of the Youth Exchange Programme, also joined the celebrations.

Modi on Wednesday met former Mauritius counterpart Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Leader of the Opposition Georges Pierre Lesjongard here discussing various aspects of the bilateral relationship.
