India, Chile hold talks to deepen bilateral strategic cooperation

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Wednesday held bilateral talks with Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Perez Mackenna, with both sides discussing ways to deepen cooperation across trade, investment and strategic sectors as India and Chile seek to strengthen bilateral ties.Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, Jaishankar described the discussions as positive and said both countries explored opportunities to diversify markets and supply chains while boosting exports and the services sector.
“The meeting with Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Perez Mackenna this morning was positive. The two countries discussed diversifying markets and supply sources, promoting exports of priority products, and facilitating the service economy,” Jaishankar said.He added that the two nations also agreed to work together more closely in multilateral forums.

Mackenna is currently on a seven-day official visit to India that began on May 9. Upon arriving in New Delhi, the Chilean Foreign Minister had said the visit would help further strengthen ties between the two countries.“This visit will be a great opportunity to further strengthen relations between Chile and India. We look forward to deepening our partnership, expanding trade and investment opportunities, and advancing cooperation in various fields,” Mackenna said in a post on X earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Piyush Goyal held a breakfast meeting with the Chilean Foreign Minister and members of his delegation, during which both sides reviewed progress in negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).Following the discussions, Goyal said the two countries explored ways to further strengthen trade, investment and strategic cooperation.
“I had a good discussion over breakfast with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Chile, Francisco Pérez Mackenna, and members of the Chilean delegation,” Goyal said.“We reviewed the progress of the CEPA negotiations and discussed ways to further deepen trade, investment and strategic partnership,” he added.Goyal said India values its long-standing partnership with Chile and remains committed to strengthening economic engagement and people-to-people ties for mutual growth and prosperity.

The discussions come at a time when India is pursuing multiple trade and economic agreements with key global partners to boost exports, attract investments and diversify supply chains amid global economic uncertainties.During his visit, Mackenna also participated in a roundtable interaction with Indian and Chilean business leaders focused on enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
